I began this project first in 2023, as I wanted some aestheic lighting in my room and the ones sold on the market are too expensive. So I decide I would try to make my own
The design of the lights is modular, allowing two units to be attached together using screws. Back then, I wasn’t very experienced with CAD, and I ran into a lot of issues with tolerances since the pieces needed to fit perfectly into each other. This forced me to go through several iterations before I was satisfied with the result.
The casing was 3D printed, and the inner light diffuser piece was laser cut from acrylic. The diffuser sits on a small lip and stays in place through friction with the walls of the light. I attached a light strip along the side walls of the panels and connected them using special wires. At the time, I had zero experience with electronics and didn’t know how to solder, so I bought a connection cable from Amazon to link the modular pieces together. That turned out to be a huge pain—it caused constant connection issues and even made several panels flash rapidly because of the poor connectivity.
